Watery planet? Or High and dry? Is there more water or land?

Globe Toss Game! I throw the globe to a camper. The camper checks his or her right pinky finger to see if it landed on water or land. The camper throws it back to me. I throw the globe to a camper. We keep a tally. Make sure all get to catch the globe once or twice!

There is More Water than Land There should be about 7 waters to 3 lands for every 10 tosses.

1) Gallon: This represents all of the water on the Earth, including our oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, marsh or wetlands, underground water, water in our atmosphere, glaciers, and the water in all living things (biomass). 2) ½ cup: Since there are 16 cups in a gallon, this leaves 15 1/2 cups. The ½ cup represents water that is fresh and therefore not salty. 3) One drop: This represents the useable amount of fresh water on Earth.

Of all the water on the planet, 97% is salty ocean and only 3% is fresh water. Fresh water includes water from lakes, rivers, and underground wells.

How Much Will This Box Hold? Estimate how many cubes will fit in the box. Record your estimates! Put some centimeter cubes in your box, do you want to revise your estimate? Record your new estimates! Fill your box with the centimeter cubes.

How many cubes did it take to fill your box? How did you find your answer? Was your estimate close?

A box takes up space. The measure of this space is called volume. Measure your box: – 1) measure the length of the box – 2) the width of the box – 3) the height of the box. { A box is a rectangular prism!}

We multiply these 3 measurements to get the volume of the rectangular prism in cubic centimeters. Length x Width x Height = number of cubic centimeters.

Background Information for the Teacher Volume is the measure of the interior of a space (three-dimensional) figure. A unit for measuring volume is the cubic unit. Capacity is the volume of a container given in units of liquid measure

Background Information for the Teacher The liter is essentially the volume of a cube 0.1 meters (10 cm) on a side. If you think about it, you will see that it will take 1000 liters to fill a cubic meter. One thousandth of a liter is called a milliliter or "ml" and a milliliter is the liquid measure for the volume of a cubic centimeter. For quick conversion purposes, a liter is about the same thing as a quart (which is a "quart"er of a gallon.)

1 cubic decimeter = 1 liter = 1000 cm

Liters and Milliliters About how many drops of water in one milliliter? Let’s find out. Predict how many drops will be in one milliliter. Fill pipette with one milliliter of water. Squirt one drop at a time until the pipette is empty. Count how many drops are in each milliliter. If there are 3 in your group, add your totals and divide by 3 to get the average number of drops in a milliliter. Use a calculator. Record your team’s average. Liters and Milliliters

Volume of Containers Try this fun interactive activity from PBS Kids. You will predict the volume of each container and try to fill it with the least number of fills possible. http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/liquidvolume/ http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/games/liquidvolume/ Gallon 1 whole Half-gallon 1/2s Quart 4ths Pint 8ths Cup 16ths

Be the first to entirely cover the one whole fraction strip with fraction pieces from your bag. Roll the die to find which fraction strip piece you can use to cover the one whole. Take turns. If you roll a fraction that cannot be used pass the number cube to the other team. (Keep your unused pieces in the bag.)

Fractions Game 2! 1) Roll the number cube to find which fraction piece to remove from the one whole strip. 2) You have three options: – Remove a fraction strip piece the size indicated on the number cube. – Exchange a fraction strip piece for equivalent pieces. – Pass to the other team.

Centimeter Cubes 1) Each of you builds a shape using the centimeter cubes. Count the number of cubes you used to make the shape. This is the shape’s volume. 2) Make another shape. You can buddy up and build together. Count the number of cubes you used. This is the shape’s volume. So, what is volume?
