3
Units We discussed standard units like the meter for distance, seconds for time, and gram for mass Today we will be learning about Derived units
4
Base Units vs. Derived Units There are 7 Base units in the SI system Base units are independent of other units SI Base Units Time – Seconds (s) Length – Meter (m) Mass – Kilogram (kg) Temperature – Kelvin (K) Amount of a substance – mole (mol) Electric current – Ampere (A) Luminous intensity – candela (cd)
5
Derived Units Not all quantities can be measured with base units. Speed for instance is measured in meters per second (m/s) :Note this includes two base units A unit derived from a combination of base units is known as a derived unit
6
Volume and Density – 2 derived units Volume is space occupied by an object Measured in cubic centimeters (cm3) Density: the ratio which Compares the mass of an object to its volume Measured in Grams per Liter (g/L or g/mL)
7
Density Density = Mass/Volume We will be doing a couple activities to help you calculate and analyze the density of different objects Turn to page 28 and write the “Materials” and “Procedures” of the DENSITY OF AN IRREGULAR SOLID miniLab on your next open RIGHT hand page.. Your answers to the analysis questions will go on the Left hand page
