Metric System International System of Units (SI)

Length, Area, and Volume

Length Measured in:  meters (m) Also uses:  Centimeters (cm)  Millimeters (mm)  Kilometers (km)

Area the amount of space on the surface of an object Measured in:  square meters (m 2 ) Formula:  Area = Length x Width A = L x W

Volume amount of space occupied by an object Measured in:  cubic meters (m 3 ), liters (L) Formula:  Volume= Length x Width x Height V = L x W x H

Volume Continued If measuring the volume of a liquid, it is measured in:  liters (L) Liquids are measured using beakers and graduated cylinders marked in milliliters. *One liter has the same volume as 1000 cm 3.

Mass, Weight, Density

Mass the amount of matter in an object. Measured in:  kilograms (kg) Also uses:  grams (g) or milligrams (mg)

Density amount of mass a material has for its volume Measured in:  Grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm 3 ) (comes from units of mass and volume) Formula:  Density= mass ÷ volume

Weight the measure of the force of gravity acting on an object Force:  A push or pull Measured in:  Newtons (N) Example: Gravitational Force/Pull = 9.8 N

Temperature There are three (3) scales for measuring temperature: Fahrenheit (F)  Boiling Point = 212ºF  Freezing = 32ºF Celsius (C)  Boiling = 100ºC  Freezing = 0ºC

Temperature Continued… Kelvin (K)  There are no degrees in Kelvin Absolute Zero =  Point at which almost all movement of the atoms in a materials stops.  Absolute Zero = -273ºC 0ºC = 273ºK

Metric Prefixes (based on multiples of 10) Prefixkilo-hecto-deka-deci-centi-milli- Symbol Meaning m, g, L

Formulas Length  Measured in meters Area  A = L x W Volume  V = L x W x H

Formulas Continued… Mass  Measured in grams Density  D = M÷V Weight  Measured in Newtons (N)
