Properties of Matter Notes
2
What is Matter? In your own words, write a definition for matter.
Our definition for matter is: Matter is anything that has stuff in it (mass) and takes up space (volume)
3
Measurements of Matter
Mass ______________ : The amount of matter in an object Most common units used to measure _____________are milligrams, grams, & kilograms Volume: _________________________________ Most common units used to measure volume are: __________, ______ & ___________ 1 mL = __ cm3 or cc (cubic centimeters) Mass The amount of space an object takes up Milliliter Liter Centimeters cubed 1
4
Density ________: the amount of matter in an object per the amount of space the object takes up Formula for density is: ______________ Labeled as g/mL, kg/L, g/cc, or mg/cm3 must have both mass and volume labels present D = Mass Volume
5
How is Mass different than Weight
As long as you are on Earth, there really NOT a difference However, there is a scientific difference Mass is ______________________________ BUT Weight is _____________________________ the amount of matter in an object the measure of amount of gravitational pull on an object
6
Practice If a box has a mass of 20 g and a volume of 10 cc, what is the density of the box? D = g 10 cc D = 2 g/cc
7
More Practice If the volume of a rock is 250 mL and it has a mass of 125 g, what is its density? D = 125 g 250 mL D = 0.5 g/mL
