Now You Can BEAT Long Division! 6e8 52 _.. 25 __. 1212 1 42 6 1 2 1 8 24 3 0 36 42 4 8 54
3
Long division getting you down? Yeah, it used to bother me too. But then I discovered… Sticks&Stones
4
Sticks & Stones… Safe… Sugar-free… Low in calories and SO EASY TO USE!
5
To use “Sticks & Stones”, start with a long division problem. 5e5 95 Honestly, “Sticks & Stones” is GREAT!
6
Next, list the first 9 multiples of the divisor. 5e5 95 5 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 The DIVISOR is the number that does the dividing.
7
Now look at the first digit of the dividend. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 The DIVIDEND is the number that is being divided. 5
8
Since you can take 1 multiple out of this digit, draw 1 “stick” under it. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 5 _ _
9
Since you drew 1 “stick”, place a 1 on top to represent it. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 5 _ 1 I cannot tell a lie. “Sticks & Stones” is the BEST !
10
Bring down the next number. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9
11
You can take 1 multiple out of this number, so draw 1 “stick”. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _ _ Wait, that only takes out “5”. What about the rest of the “9”?
12
Count up from the last “stick” (5) and draw a “stone” for each remaining number until you reach 9. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 6 This “stick” equals 5! 789
13
Place a 1 on top to represent the 1 “stick” that you drew, then put a 4 underneath the “stones”. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 Where did the “4” come from?
14
The 4 comes from the 4 “stones that were drawn. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 Where did the “4” come from?
15
Now bring down the last digit. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 5 “Sticks & Stones” is better than pizza!
16
Draw 1 “stick” for every multiple you can take out of the number. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 5 __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
17
Place a “9” on top to represent the number of “sticks” drawn. 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 5 __ 9 “Sticks & Stones” is a real gift!
18
Since there are no more numbers to bring down, you are finished! 5e5 95 5 1 0 1 5 2 0 25 3 0 35 4 0 45 _ 1 9 _.... 1 4 5 __ 9
19
Now you have seen Sticks & Stones ! Let’s try another… 4e2 19
20
First, list the multiples of the divisor (the number doing the dividing). 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 4
21
Now look at the first digit in the dividend (the number being divided). 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 2 Hey! That number is too small to be divided by 4!
22
That’s right! So now you will have to look at the first 2 digits together! 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 2 Hey! That number is too small to be divided by 4! 1
23
Now draw 1 “stick” for each multiple that you can remove from the number 21. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 21 Hmmm…I can go all the way up to 20, so I can draw 5 sticks!
24
Now draw 1 “stick” for each multiple that you can remove from the number 21. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 21 Hmmm…I can go all the way up to 20, so I can draw 5 sticks! __ 4 8 1212 1616 2020
25
Hmmm… those 5 “sticks” only took us up to 20… How do we get to 21? 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 21 __
26
That’s right, count on from 20 until we reach 21, and draw a “stone” for each number. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 21 __. These 5 “sticks” represent 20. This “stone” makes 21.
27
Now, place a “5” on top to represent the 5 “sticks”. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. Place a “1” below to represent the “stone”. 5 1
28
Hmmmm… What should we do next? 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. Oh yes, bring down the next number! 5 1 9
29
Ok… now what? 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. That’s it, draw a “stick” for each multiple you can take out of 19. 5 1 9 4 8 1212 1616
30
That took us to 16… now what? 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. Oh yes, count on from 16 while drawing “stones” 5 1 9. 1717. 1818. 1919
31
Now, count the “sticks” and put the number on top. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. Then count the “stones” and place the number below. 5 1 9... 4 3
32
There are no more numbers to bring down, so you are finished dividing. 4e2 19 4 8 1 2 1 6 2 0 24 2 8 32 36 __. 5 1 9... 4 3
33
Because there are no numbers left to bring down, the “3” is the remainder. 4e2 19 __. 5 1 9... 4 3 What about that “3” left at the bottom? r 3
34
And that ‘s it! Sticks & Stones, Get yours today!
