2. I) A Truly Global Conflict
By early 1915 it was apparent to all the warring nations that swift victory had eluded them and the war promised to be a long drawn out affair.
The Allies expand the war, searching for a way to end the stalemate.
A promising strategy seemed to be to attack the Ottoman Empire at the Dardanelles, the gateway to Constantinople. By May of 1915 this conflict had also turned in to a bloody stalemate
The Allies also attacked German colonial possessions in Asia and Africa, and recruited subjects in their colonies for the struggle.

3. I) A Truly Global Conflict
Germany announced it would sink any ship headed for Britain (unrestricted submarine warfare)
The German sinking of the British passenger ship Lusitanian killed 1,198 people including 128 Americans.
The British intercepted a secret telegram from Germany to Mexico inviting them to join the war (Zimmerman telegraph) and it would help Mexico reconquer the land lost to the United States.
These two events along with the Americans closer ties culturally and economically to the Allies caused the United States to join the war in April 1917.

4. II) War Affects the Home Front
By the time the US joined the Allies, the war had been going on for nearly 3 years and had claimed millions of lives.
The war, known as the great war, affected not only the soldiers in the trenches, but civilians as well.
Nearly every able bodied civilian was put to work and numerous facilities were converted to munitions factories where the government told factories what to produce and how much.
World War I became a total war, where a country devotes all of its resources to the war and the government takes control of the national economy.

5. II) War Affects the Home Front
Because so many goods were in short supply, the government turned to rationing, where people could only buy small amounts of items that were needed for the war effort.
Governments also used propaganda, one sided information designed to persuade, to keep up the morale and support for the war
With millions of men at the front, many women had to go to work in the factories and elsewhere.

6. III) Allies Win the War
World War I helped bring civil unrest in Russia, where a communist revolution behind Vladimir Lenin seized power and offered Germany a truce.
This allowed Germany to send nearly all of its troops west for one final massive assault in France.
Despite some initial German success, fresh American troops help to defeat Germany at the 2nd Battle of Marne, where they begin to advance to Germany.
Kaiser Wilhelm II is forced step down (abdicate) and Germany and the Allies sign an armistice (peace agreement) to end the war on November 11, 1918.
