Language Reading Students are assessed in class according to board benchmark assessments. Helps determine an independent reading level. Daily at home reading is essential in your child's success in becoming a proficient reader (Snuggle Up, Shared Reading, Teachyourmonster and Raz- Kids). Strategies learned at school can be extended while reading at home. How you as a parent can assist your child: Daily Reading! See brochuer When reading: make prediction, picture walks, decoding words, retell the story Ask your child questions at the end of the story to check understanding. Point to the words as they read a text

Language Continued It is a self-selected text (not leveled to your child's independent level) You do not need to return the book on a daily basis. Use strategies to help your child read and decode new words. Discuss: Character, events, setting, problem and solution). Interactive at home reading program. Students are provided with leveled texts and on some levels there are quizzes to assess understanding. It reports back to the teacher to help monitor your child`s progress. You as parents can send your child messages encouraging them and their online reading. * We are working on relaunching it for the new school year. Snuggle Up & Read Teach your monster to read Raz-Kids Program Teach Your Monster to Read is completely free to play on desktop and laptop computers. Teach Your Monster to Read is a series of games which help children to learn the key first stages of reading. Each game covers a different part of the reading journey, and are designed for children at different reading levels.

Language Continued Word Study 5 weekly words, weekly word family (letter sound focus) along with the homework. 1 monthly “super test” – Child will be retested on the previous weeks within the month plus their newest words of the week including current and previous word families. New words will be written in your child's agenda every Monday. Please review throughout the week. Phonics, Vowel Sounds, Word Families and Making Words activities. Writing Goal: generate, gather and organize ideas and information. Write for intended audience and purpose. Forms: List writing, retell, letter writing and journal writing. -By the end of the year they should be able to write a sentence describing their ideas with as many details as possible. -For instance: I went to the park. (that is not sufficient enough). -I went to the park with my mom and dad and we played on the swings and slides. I loved it because it made me really happy to spend time with them. (Level 4 = A) -- They need to be mindful of their audience, their grammar, punctuation and details. -- This is why the grade 1 teachers teach their students early how to spell the word because.

Language Continued Oral Communication Ability to effectively communicate. - organizes and expresses ideas orally with considerable clarity and logic. They are encouraged to use appropriate volume when sharing ideas in a group setting. - The ability to listen effectively in order to understand and respond appropriately. Media Literacy Understand a variety of media texts and how these forms attract a specific audience.

Mathematics Parent latters are sent home at the beginning of all units outlining what you can do with your child at home to help assist in his/her learning along with expectations. Home/ School Communication & House Keeping Items: As mentioned, I believe in open communication with the parents of my students because I firmly believe we are a team. I send home weekly news letters (Mr. Koren Monday Morning Memos), I update my portal as much as I can with information for you (such as this presentation) and I am always open to having a meeting or a phone call to discuss your child’s education. Please ensure that you sign your child's agenda every night ensuring that you have seen their agenda. Field Trips: Springridge Farms and possibly two more to follow.
