3 Developmentally Appropriate PE for Children The importance and value of physical activity has been recognized in 21 st Century Childhood is the time to begin the development of active and healthy lifestyles

4 Developmentally Appropriate PE for Children (Cont) Children do not automatically develop the skills, knowledge, attitudes and behaviors that lead to regular participation in physical activity They must be taught This is the responsibility of school physical education programs

5 Quality PE for Children Developmentally appropriate PE guidelines were developed by the Council on Physical Education for Children (COPEC) Quality PE means developmentally and instructionally suitable for the specific children being served

6 Quality PE for Children (Cont) A developmentally appropriate PE program considers a variety of individual characteristics such as:  Developmental status  Previous movement experiences  Fitness level  Body size and age

7 Instructionally Appropriate PE It incorporates the best known practice from research and real teaching experience with children’s PE It maximizes opportunities for learning and success for all children The outcome of developmentally and instructionally appropriate PE is a “Physically Educated Person”

8 PHYSICALLY EDUCATED PERSON In 1990, NASPE defined it as one who: HAS learned the skills necessary to perform a variety of physical activities DOES participate regularly in physical activity KNOWS the benefits of physical activity VALUES physical activity and its benefits for a healthy lifestyle

9 REMEMBER APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN PROVIDE AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP TOWARD “BECOMING A PHYSICALLY EDUCATED PERSON”

10 Premises of PE Programs for Children There are three important premises that need to be understand very well

11 1- PE and Athletic Programs Have Different Purposes Athletic programs are essentially designed for youngsters who are eager to specialize in one or more sports However Developmentally Appropriate PE programs are designed for every child from the physically gifted to the physically challenged

12 1- PE and Athletic Programs Have Different Purposes (Cont) The purpose is to provide children of all abilities and interests with a foundation of movement experiences Hopefully, this will lead to active and healthy lifestyles Athletic competition may be one part of this lifestyle, but it is not the only part

13 2- Children are not Miniature Adults Children have different abilities, needs, interests than adults It is inadequate to apply the principles of adult sports and activities for children Children need and learn from programs that are designed specifically with their needs and differences in mind

14 3- Children in School Today Will not be Adults in Today’s World Tomorrow’s physical activities may look quite different from today But mastery of basic skills encourages the development and refinement of more complex skills leading to enjoyment of physical activity
