Globes Globes are 3- dimensional models of the Earth (only smaller, of course!) Globes are too bulky and big to carry around with you when traveling.

Maps Maps are better than globes as tools for finding locations. Maps are distorted. – The shape and size of the land and water is not an exact representation.

Compass Rose A compass rose shows the directions. – North – South – East – West – Northwest – Northeast – Southwest – Southeast E SW S W NW NE SE

Map Legends and Scales A map legend is used to show where things are located. A scale is used to show actual distances (since maps are a lot smaller than the real thing).

Physical Map A Physical Map shows landforms like lakes, rivers, mountains, and plains.

Political Map A Political Map shows cities.

Climate Map A Climate Map shows weather. – Rainfall – Temperatures

River A river is a long body of water that flows across land.
