2
Presentation outline Factors constraining the industry in Scotland The Hydrogen Office The project Support to the industry Current position Going forward The completed project SHFCA
3
What is constraining the hydrogen and fuel cell industry in Scotland i.Wide scale public acceptance ? ii.In-depth stakeholder understanding ? iii.A shortage of projects to - Prove and promote Scottish technologies and services ? Develop and value engineer integrated solutions ? Enhance integrated management systems ?
4
What is the Hydrogen Office? A highly energy efficient building to prove that renewable and hydrogen technologies can safely and reliably meet the energy needs of a modern office building, whilst being carbon neutral and largely energy independent The building - Will be approximately 1000 m 2 Support 70+ people Be powered by wind, solar and heat pumps/biomass Store excess renewable energy as hydrogen The Hydrogen Office will serve as the headquarters' to the Business Environment Partnership, will offer workspace to SMEs, and be promoted as a demonstration centre for renewable and hydrogen technologies
5
How does the Hydrogen Office support the development of the industry in Scotland ? The project provides - A high profile demonstration centre for renewable and hydrogen technologies and services in the Scottish central belt A vehicle to engage key stakeholders, and improve awareness and understanding of hydrogen and fuel cells A project to support the migration of hydrogen technologies and skills out of industry, and into the commercial and domestic sector An opportunity to unlock ongoing research, technology development, value engineering and knowledge transfer
6
The current position i.With £1.1M ERDF funding, and support from Scottish Enterprise (a partnership between SEEL and the Energy team), the BEP is close to completing the funding package ii.The number of development sites has been reduced to 2 (both in Midlothian) iii.We are starting to think about the design team
7
Going forward 1.Complete funding package September/October 05 2.Site acquisitionSeptember 05 3.Fully drawn up plans for the buildingOctober/November 05 4.Team in place December/January 05/06 5.Warrants and planning permission secured Feb/March 06 6.On siteApril/May 06 7.Building completedJune 07
9
Phase 2 – the ongoing opportunities 1.A centrally located and easily accessible demonstration centre with – A renewable and hydrogen energy system Information and data displays/exhibits Meeting rooms Visitor facilities 2.Workspace for micro SMEs 3.A high profile Edinburgh home for organisations interested in the development of the hydrogen and fuel cell industry in Scotland 4.Hydrogen lab space ? 5.‘Plug in and play’ facilities ? 6.Others???
10
Promoting hydrogen and fuel cells in Scotland The Hydrogen Office will seek to attract interest from - Public planning, policy and development agencies Public safety organisations (fire service etc) Commercial/private developers, investors, insurers and customers Educational centres and schools The general public – to a limited degree The business plan includes a full time marketing and PR manager, to maximise interest in the demonstration centre
11
SHFCA An opportunity for the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell industry i)Which hydrogen and fuel cell related organisations in Scotland have an interest in supplying technology or services to the project ? ii)Is there an appetite for hydrogen lab space ? iii)Is there a need for ‘plug in and play‘ test facilities ? iv)Which organisations might wish to have a base in the Hydrogen Office ? v)Are there other opportunities ?
