Do Now Introduction to a class routine

Do Now  We begin Mon, Tues, Thurs, and Fri with a Do Now  Fridays are almost always an “open journal”—write about anything you want (school appropriate) and it has to make sense.  May be a quote, painting, film clip, song or other short activity.  Posted on the board when you walk in class. . You are responsible for completing ALL do nows (even when you are absent).  You will receive a stamp each day (hopefully) for completing the assignment.  Periodically I will check your notebooks for stamps and enter a grade.

Expectations and Why  50 words  Thoughtful and insightful  Makes sense  As you count your words (write the total in the margins) re-read it to check for clarity  Why: writing on demand is become quite common in our society. More and more jobs (even lower-level) require some sort of writing sample. You are also often asked to write on demand in college and be able to think quickly and clearly.

8/13 Do Now  Pg. 8  Please respond to the following quote:  “Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation are at a standstill” Barbara Tuchman, author The Guns of August.

8/14 Do Now  Pg. 10  What do you see? What is she doing? Close your eyes, then open them and see where you eye naturally goes. What is the mood/tone of this painting? What does it make you think about? Why do you think the author painted it? What does it “say” (include evidence)?

8/15 Do Now  Pg. 14  Open Journaling. Write about anything you want (school appropriate) but it needs to make sense.  Suggestions  Journal entry  World events  Things you think about regularly

8/18 Do Now  Pg. 14  “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop” is an old puritan saying. What does it say about their work ethic? What does it say about their views on vacations and days off?  Idle = lacking worth; not occupied.

8/19 Do Now  Pg. 18  There are approximately 171,500 words in the English language. William Shakespeare used about 31,500 different words in his plays. According to recent research the average teenager uses the same 800 words daily. This doesn’t mean they don’t know other words, but that they only use 800 regularly. There is a belief that this could have a strong effect on young people’s ability to get a job later in life.  What do you think? How complex is your everyday vocabulary? What can you tell about a person by the language they use regularly?

8/21 Do Now  Pg. 18  What are your most important possessions? Why? What makes these things irreplaceable?  Keep in mind that most of what we have is replaceable i.e. phones, clothes, etc…

8/22 Do Now  Pg. 20  Open Journaling. Write about anything you want (school appropriate) but it needs to make sense.  Suggestions  Journal entry  World events  Things you think about regularly

8/24 Do Now  Pg. 22  How can fear be used to control people? Why is it so effective as a tool of control?

8/25 Do Now Pg. 22 The Puritans believed humans were sinners and could only be redeemed in the eyes of God. How would this create problems in their society as well as order?

8/28 Do Now Pg. 26  How would you define “American Values”? Remember, this isn’t necessarily about your own individuals values (which have variations from the whole group), but those you think we as a nation hold. Values= a persons principles or standards of behavior; one’s judgment of what is important in life.

8/29 Do Now  Pg. 26  Open Journaling. Write about anything you want (school appropriate) but it needs to make sense.  Suggestions  Journal entry  World events  Things you think about regularly
