Important Parts of a Map Map Key Compass Rose Scale

Map Key The Map Key explains the symbols used on the map.

Compass Rose On a map, a Compass Rose tells us where the Cardinal Directions – north, south, east, and west- are positioned. Intermediate directions fall between the compass rose. (Northeast, Southwest etc.)

Scale A measuring line, often called a scale bar, helps you find distance on a map. The map’s scale tells you what distance on the earth is represented by the measurement on the scale bar. (ex: 1 inch = 100 miles)

Political Maps Political maps generally show political, or human-made divisions of countries or regions.

Physical Maps A physical map shows the physical features of an area, such as mountains and rivers. Physical maps show relief (how flat our rugged the surface is.) Physical maps show elevation (the height of an area above sea level.)

Contour Maps Contour maps have contour lines one for each major level of elevation.
