3. 3 Indications – Obtain sterile urine samples for analysis and/or culture/sensitivity – Minimizes urinary tract infections caused by catheterization – Aids in localization of hematuria, pyuria, and bacteriuria

4. Contraindications – Bladder not full enough – Patient resists restraint and palpation – Recent abdominal surgery or trauma – Suspected bleeding disorders, pyometra, or suspected caudal abdominal or bladder tumors – Laceration of the bladder – Suspected laceration of the bowel

5. Concerns – Leakage of urine – Needle against the bladder wall – Not possible in most large animals

6. SUPPLIES: 12 – 20 cc syringe 22 guage needle 1 – 1½ inch long Alcohol

7. To help locate the bladder, pour alcohol onto the abdomen of an animal in dorsal recumbency and it will pool in the location of the bladder, or mentally draw an X crossing over the abdomen between the last 2 sets of mammary glands. These techniques are then confirmed by palpation. Always save 1 ml or more urine for an unexpected culture.
