WORD CHOICE Diction, repetition, imagery

Diction  This refers to an author’s choice of words. When writing practise the following when focussing on word choice:  Use comparisons to make ideas clear  Replace repeated words…delete words that do not contribute to your writing  Use strong, precise verbs that allow readers top see the action  Use imagery  Replace or define unfamiliar words

Diction  Being aware of word choice will allow you to say what you want to say. It will also make you think about how to describe things better.  The bay was calm at sun rise.  The bay was still, mirror-like and motionless as the sun spread its summer warmth.

Imagery Writing that appeals to a reader’s senses. The scene is described so clearly and accurately a reader cannot help but feel they are part of it. Try to use more than visual imagery… there is more to create than just the visual.

Repetition Sometimes a writer says a word, phrase, or sentence more than once. This is done for a couple of reasons: A.Emphasis: When things are important we say them over and over. The same thing goes for writing. If a writer wants the reader to pay careful attention then he will repeat certain words and phrases. This helps highlight both theme and mood.

Repetition B.Repetition also gives a sense of completeness to a piece of writing. Beginning and then ending with the same or very similar phrases, will make the selection seem complete and more like a finished package.
