IMPACT-ADD proposal 1 st IMPACT Workshop HR Wallingford, UK 16 - 17 th May 2002 Investigation of Extreme Flood Processes and Uncertainty - Additional Partners Zuzana Boukalová, GEO Group

GEO Group company: specialized engineering and consulting company, providing wide spectrum of services in applied geology and hydrogeology. AREAS OF ACTIVITY: Geology Hydrogeology Water Management Waste Management Geophysical works Ecological Studies and Risk Analyses Recovery operations International cooperation

The current IMPACT project plans to develop knowledge and predictive tools through: analysis of field data sets specification of embankment condition and parameters laboratory data numerical modelling data. What offers the IMPACT-ADD proposal? Assessment of the dam´s and embankment´s conditions via geophysical methods.

GEOPHYSICAL METHODS are: non-destructive fast inexpensive giving us actually continuous information on the condition of dams.

GEOELECTRIC methods The best method for enbankments inhomogenity survey: Portable DC Resistivity System: RS-100M ResiStar & ME-12 Multi-Electrode Cable System (fully automated resistivity measurements). Output: Localisation of seepages, groundwater flow direction, dam inhomogenities. THERMOMETRIC method Output: Localisation of seepages Geophysical methods, applicable to IMPACT project:

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Interpreted output: Structure and homogenity of a dam

SEISMIC methods Interpreted output: Velocity model of a dam Characterisation of the consolidation, basic geotechnical properties of the material

GRAVIMETRIC methods Density model of a dam Output: Density model of a dam

Geophysical methods Geoelectric methods GPR Seismic methods Thermometry Physical parameters Resistivity & Natural electric potential Dielectric constant Seismic velocities Temperature APPLIED GEOPHYSICAL METHODS AND OBSERVED PARAMETERS:

Key GEOPHISICAL Methods for IMPAT-ADD proposal are: Geoelectric methods (self-potential, resistivity, filtration-potential) complemented by shellow refraction seicmics and ground penetrating radar. In case of superficial survey volume the other methods can be considered (eg. micro-geravity).

The main innovation of the IMPACT-ADD project: Utilisation of geophysical methods for application to flood defence embankments, embankment dams etc. Geophysical methods are generally very widely utilised methods Use together with modelling of possible influences on failure of the water management works is their first application in Europe.

IMPACT-ADD addition to IMPACT: A 6 th theme was proposed to complement the existing 5 themes: Monitoring & Case Study Data The 6 th theme will complement each of the other 5 themes, but in particular themes 2 (Breach Formation) and 4 (Sediment Movement). Theme Monitoring & Case Study Data shall be very closely tied up with the preceding themes 2 and 4 and shall attempt to evaluate its outputs in the sense of general utilization within the whole Europe.

EXPECTED RESULTS Guidelines for the application of geophysical methods suitable for checking the current condition of a dam and embankment. Guidelines for the application of geophysical methods suitable for long-term monitoring of a dam condition. The application of input geophysical data for the physical and mathematical modelling and the verification of results achieved by the modelling. The application od geophysical methods for prediction of dam and embankment failure.

GEO Group company IMPACT-ADD Partner N. 10: Scientific contribution: direct use of geophysical methods and their utilization for reevaluation of the available and continuously monitored data: The identification of weakened / disturbed dam parts. Monitoring of dam breach formation processes due to repeated seepage occurred in case of higher water. Proposal for the optimal extent of repairs of weakened/disturbed dam parts. The identification of dam structure and its physical/ geomechanical properties for the purposes of physical and matematical modelling.

GEO Group company IMPACT-ADD Partner N. 10: End-Users Management: Direct connection to the wide range of the End-Users - owners of the water management works: to assess potential risks from failure and sediment movement - authorities and emergency planing bodies, water companies - ministries (for Regional Development, of the Environment): for strategic planning of activities. Application of results in the form of the strategic/methodical recommendation. The inner structure of management between GEO Group and the End-Users, represented in the newly formed End User Committee.

Geoelectric methods use demonstration : Multi-Electrode cable System (Resistivity Imaging) Portable DC Resistivity system use (RS-100M ResiStar & ME-12 Multi-Electrode Cable System). The three-dimensional animation of localisation of places damaged by activity of small animals after the floods in the year 1997, the disrupted dam, Czech Republic.
