10 Iowa Department of Education Highlights So Far  Legislature (Progression for Early Readers-§279.68) o High Quality initial reading instruction for all Iowa students in grades K-3 o Universal screening for ALL students 3 times per year o Progress Monitoring weekly for any student who is at- risk o Intensive Interventions for students with a “substantial deficiency” in reading (required) and for students at-risk (recommended)

12 Iowa Department of Education Highlights So Far  Notification to parents about: o Deficiency in reading o Strategies to use at home o Student progress reports  Retention at the end of 3 rd grade if: o Student is not proficient o Student does not enroll and complete the intensive summer reading program o Student does not qualify for a good cause exemption
