1920’s and 1930’s John Reith set up the BBC to educate people, and also entertaining people. The idea was to use the BBC for social action and campaigning. The 1920’s saw the BBC become a professional broadcasting organization for radio, and saw the end of amateur radio enthusiasts. In the 1930’s the BBC continually invested and developed, and became the first broadcaster to begin a regular scheduled TV service, in 1936. The BBC began to put a lighter feel to their presentation in order to keep the public’s morale up during the war.

After the War – 1940’s After the Second World War, the first TV news service was launched, children’s television began, and the first post-war Olympic Games was televised. In the spirit of re-building Britain, BBC engineers invented the first means of recording live TV, and extended the corporations international presence.

1950’s – ‘The Decade of Television In the 1950’s the Coronation was televised, and many people believe that this was a driving force behind a huge increase in sales of television sets. The radio was still very important during the 1950’s, and early in the decade the world’s longest running radio soap opera was born – The Archers. The BBC TV’s second big debut of the decade came in 1958, in the form of a children’s programme – Blue Peter – which still runs today.

1970’s – Classic Comedy Despite the majority of the world suffering from hyper- inflation, this decade proved to be an era in which the BBC scored major hits in its light entertainment programmes. Fawlty Towers (which won awards), Are You Being Served, and The Good Life, were all programmes born in the 1970’s. Morecambe, which topped ratings, Wise Show, and The Two Ronnies were also huge hits for the BBC during this decade. The BBC also developed CEEFAX for TV (teletext), and they also developed quadraphonic sound for Radio.

1980’s – The Decade of Conflict During the decade there were a lot of conflicts across the world, which stretched the BBC’s resources immensely. The Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Tiananmen Square, the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, are only some of the conflicts which happened during this decade. Eastenders also began in the mid eighties and it is still running today. Michael Buerk, a reporter for the BBC in Africa, alerted the world through the BBC News Channel to a famine of biblical proportions in Ethiopia, which ultimately led to Bob Geldof’s International Live Aid concert in 1985, which was masterminded by the BBC.
