The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, released in 1987. They recruited John Frusciante in place of Slovak (guitarist) and Chad Smith in place of Irons (drummer). This version of the band recorded Mother’s Milk in 1989. Frusciante left and David Navarro filled in for him on the album One Hot Minute, which was released in 1995. Their Music Style Their diverse music has ranged from thrashy punk-funk to Hendrix-laced psychedelic rock, and tuneful, California pop in between. As the Chili Peppers aged, their songs became more laid-back and lyrical.
6
Stemming From Rhythm and Blues The Red Hot Chili Peppers rock music style originates in rhythm and blues. Mostly they use a guitar, bass, plus an added drum for rhythm. Drums bang heavily on the backbeats as typically heard in “rhythm and blues.” Identifiable elements from “psychedelic rock,” such as increased amplification and sound distortion by manipulation of electronic equipment. Heavy metal components, like the musical sophistication, guitar solos of considerable complexity, and obsessive bass riffs.

Yurtle The Turtle Listen for: Jazzy sound due to the saxophone instrumentation. Virtuositic guitar solo. Emphatic, rhythmic declamation of lyrics like that of early hip hop or rap music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXWzbsnb638 The Zephyr Song Listen for: Keyboard synthesizer that allowed distortion of background music. In the music video, notice the psychedelic rock aspects that are apparent, such as the distortion of colors and the ability to “see” the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcRa5Z6LmU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fcRa5Z6LmU Californication Listen for: Guitar, bass, and accompaniment of drum instrumentation. Simple rhythmic background. “Backbeats” or heavy emphasis on beats two and four. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlUKcNNmywk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlUKcNNmywk

Influences The person who has had the most influence on the band has to be Jimi Hendrix. Flea even has Hendrix’s face tattooed on his arm. Some may say that they are the worlds biggest Jimi Hendrix tribute act. They mimic Hendrix’s ability to improvise when necessary, use extreme distortion of sounds, and demonstrate exceptional guitar skills.

Influences Singer Anthony Kiedis has always had a scary resemblance to Iggy Pop, but over recent years the similarities have grown downright eerie. Iggy’s influence infused the Chili Peppers with a punk spirit that still keeps them edgy. Parliament-Funkadelic’s mastermind, George Clinton, was were the Red Hot Chili Peppers got the idea to slap rock riffs together with elastic funk rhythms, giving them a decadent vibe to their music. Van Halen was a huge influence on the Chili Peppers, due to the fact that Chad Smith is a diehard metal head. Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, and Van Halen kept the band palatable for mainstream audiences.
10
Red Hot Chili Peppers Their live shows possess an energizing physicality that is liberating to both the band and audience. Without question the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a band of survivors, having hit many bumps but never missed a beat. Facing tragedies from the death of a band member to incredible drug addictions, they are on a constant quest to create music that is honest soulful, and powerful.
