3
Not PreparedVery Prepared How prepared are teachers to integrate Social Studies and English Language Arts? Professional Development Resources Instructional Support Campus Support
4
Teacher Survey Some schools are prepared and have the resources and knowledge to integrate and some schools do not Concern about the integrity of the teaching of Social Studies and English Language Arts
5
Shared Model Partner planning and teaching to create a focus on shared concepts, skills, and attitudes that provide rich and robust integration of the curricula
6
When is this shared model useful? When subjects are clustered When designing instruction that is meant to be enduring – learning that follows students into real-world experiences
7
What does it look like? Shared ideas that come from within the disciplines Based on shared elements – inductive approach What concepts do these units share? Are we teaching similar skills? Do the two units have shared ideas in terms of concepts, skills, attitudes, and standards? The key is to look for concepts, topics, skills, attitudes, standards, and habits of mind that occur in both subjects Integration should begin with two disciplines and then build from there
8
Advantages Easy use to a more fully integrated model Easier to schedule common planning periods for a two-teacher team than to juggle a four teacher team Can lead to sharing of content and instructional experiences Disadvantages Planning time needed to develop the units Commitment of trust and teamwork or it might not work
9
Shared planning takes place in two disciplines in which overlapping concepts or ideas emerge as organizing elements.
