Language Experience Approach The approach integrates the language arts skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The steps: – (1) oral expression by the child with another person acting as a recorder, – (2) oral expression with a recorder doing most of the writing and the student making some contribution, – (3) writing by the student with the aid of the teacher or another person, and – (4) writing by the student alone. (Galloway & Gray, 1976)

One-Minute Pair “Talk” 張思中外語教學法 One-minute pair talk at the beginning of the class (with competition sometimes) Content of the “talk”: – Q&A – Greetings Objective: fluency, automaticity

Storytelling Storyteller – By the teacher – By more competent students Audience – To classmates – To juniors in other classes – On YouTube

Reading Aloud Text type – readings from the textbook – picture story books (including big books) – student-created stories Reader – Group reading – Individual reading Audience – To partner – To classmates – To schoolmates through CD

Book Talks Use big books (or enlarge pages on the projector) By the teacher (mostly) Q & A about the book – Questions in various forms and levels – Allow short answers but provide models of long answers Invite students to talk about part of the book
