2 NOUNS A noun is a naming word. As a naming word, it names a person, event,a place or a thing. There are different types of nouns, as the diagram below shows.

4 C OMMON - P ROPER N OUNS Proper nouns are words that name a specific person, place, thing or idea. Proper nouns are capitalized so the reader can tell them apart from common nouns C OMMON NOUNS DO NOT NAME A SPECIFIC PERSON, PLACE, THING OR IDEA. COMMON NOUNS ARE NOT CAPITALIZED UNLESS THEY ARE AT THE BEGINNING OF A SENTENCE OR PART OF A TITLE.

13 NOTE: Although ordinary proper nouns do not take the definite article the, in the special usage the is used. The following are the important cases of special usage. 1)we use the with names of canals, oceans, groups of islands, mountain groups, some rivers, some countries some deserts and some hotels. Examples: -lake Victoria is the source of the Nile. - The Sahara, the Kalahari and the Namib deserts are all found in Africa.

14 2)We also use the when referring to a family ; example, the Kimani’s. 3) we can also use the when referring to a common noun that has been used until it has become a fixed name. Example; The East African Standard. It is also the when referring to scripture books, for example, the Bible, the Koran,etc. Universities named after a place can usually have two forms. For example the University of Nairobi or Nairobi University. But universities named after a person have only one form, for example, Kenyatta University and Egerton University.
