1 Light A special kind of wave!

2 Light is only one of a whole family of useful waves!
Radio Microwaves Infra-Red Visible light Ultra-violet X-rays Gamma rays Next?

3 One wave we can see! Light is only one small part of a whole range of waves called the electromagnetic spectrum Gamma rays X-rays ultraviolet Visible light infrared microwaves radio waves Short wavelength long wavelength

4 Remember the waves in electromagnetic spectrum?
Use this phrase to help you… Rabbits Mate In Very Unusual eXpensive Gardens Radio waves Microwaves Infra red Visible light Ultra violet X rays Gamma rays

5 Visible light Visible light is only a very small part of the electromagnetic spectrum Light that we can see can be split up as it passes through a prism. We can then see these different colours known as the visible spectrum. A rainbow is formed when light is split up as it passes through raindrops.

6 Can you remember the spectrum colours?
Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet

7 Where does visible light fit in?
Gamma rays X-rays ultraviolet Visible light infrared microwaves radio waves Notice where ‘violet’ light is?.... Next to Ultra violet rays! Notice where ‘red’ light is?.... Next to Infra red rays!

8 Time to test yourself! You have seen that visible light waves are only one small part of a range of useful waves called the electromagnetic spectrum There are seven types of waves in the electromagnetic spectrum – remember the rabbit rhyme? Visible light can be split into seven colours – called the visible spectrum – remember ROY G BIV Now try this test….. ..or go back to the beginning if you are not sure………
