Activity Students will take turns reading aloud and answering questions during the power point.

Your Heredity What physical traits do you share with your parents or close family members? Many factors affect your health and wellness. You have control over some of them but not all. You can not the color of your skin or eyes or the shape of many of your body parts. Heredity controls these and other physical traits. Genes are the basic building blocks that are made from a chemical called DNA. You inherit half your traits from each parent.

Your Environment Your environment includes all the living and nonliving things around you.

Your Health Choices Your daily choices shape your health and wellness. Have you ever heard of the saying - (You are what you eat )? Choices, unlike environment or heredity, are under your complete control. It is important to take responsibility for your personal health behaviors and choices.

Influences of Family and Friends Your family is one of the biggest influences on your life. It shapes your ‘cultural background,’ or the beliefs, customs, and traditions of a specific group of people. Your family and its cultural background can influence many things including which holidays that you celebrate, the foods you eat, and the activities that you take part in.

Media Influences The media are all sources of information. Media can influence your choices, so it is important to evaluate the source and know the facts before making risky decisions. Some media, especially commercials and magazine ads will be downright untruthful in order to try and get you to purchase their products. They are not concerned about your health.

Activity Discuss examples of some products that are marketed by celebrities and/or experts and how they try to get you to purchase these products. What types of strategies do they use? Example – Air Jordan Shoes created for the famous basketball player, Michael Jordan. People thought if they wore these particular Nikes that they could fly through the air and play basketball like Jordan.
