What is Mental Health? A person’s condition with regard to emotional, psychological and social well-being Helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices Mental health is important at every stage of life

Causes of Mental Health Problems Mental health problems can affect thinking, mood, and behavior Some factors that contribute to mental health problems are: Biological Factors(genes or brain chemistry) Life Experiences(trauma or abuse) Family History of Mental Health Problems

Insanity vs Psychosis Insanity The legal (not clinical) designation for the state of an individual judged to be legally irresponsible or incompetent Psychosis A severe mental condition characterized by a loss of contact with reality Can you have a mental health problem without being psychotic or insane?

Stress Any negative emotional experience that is accompanied by biochemical, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral responses that are aimed at changing or adjusting to the stressor

The Brain vs The Mind BRAIN an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity MIND the element of a person that enables them to be aware of the world and their experiences, to think, and to feel; the faculty of consciousness and thought.
