2. CONFLICT  Definition : Conflict is the struggle that a character or characters in a story must overcome. Takes place between two or more opposing forces Produces tension and drives the action of the plot 2 kinds— Internal Conflict & External Conflict  Without a conflict, there is no plot; without a plot, there is no story… So…without a conflict, there is not a story!

3. Types of Conflict Internal conflict:  man vs. self – a character struggles with his or her own personal fears, personality flaws, desires, etc.  Example: A character is afraid of heights and must cross a deep chasm on an old, shaky bridge

4. Types of Conflict (cont’d) External conflict:  man vs. man – a character struggles with one or more of the other characters  Examples: A pair of brothers are always trying to “one-up” each other to gain their father’s favor Good sorcerer vs. bad sorcerer

5. Types of Conflict (cont’d) External conflict:  man vs. nature – a character struggles with some force of nature  Example: After his guide deserts him, the hero must survive harsh conditions in the blazing sun with no water or provisions, and a pack of lions is right behind him.

6. Types of Conflict (cont’d) External conflict:  man vs. society – a character struggles with the law or some other aspect of society and its expectations  Example: A princess falls in love with a commoner, but according to the country’s laws, they can’t marry because he is not royalty.

Types of Conflict (cont’d) External conflict:  man vs. fate – a character struggles against destiny or circumstances that he/she cannot control Very common in mythology  Example: The hero is destined to fight against his own brother because the gods caused them to be separated at birth and raised by opposing countries High blood pressure runs in your family, so most likely, you will have it when you are older.
