2 Conflict: Conflict in literature is the struggle between two opposing forces.

3 Internal Conflict Internal conflict occurs within a character; a character has an ethical or emotional challenge. A character might think: “Am I making the right decision?” or “Should I be doing this?”

4 External Conflict: A struggle between the protagonist and another character, against nature or some outside force.

5 Man vs. Man A character in literature struggles against another character. This can be in the form of physical conflicts, conflicting desires, or opposing goals. Man vs. man is an example of external conflict.

6 Man vs. Technology or Fantasy
This conflict encompasses several spheres, such as man fighting against technological advances, man fighting against aliens and man fighting against supernatural forces. Examples: “I, Robot” (technology) “Alien” (fantasy)

7 Man vs. Nature This occurs when a character fights against the forces of nature. Man vs. nature is an example of external conflict Examples: “The Perfect Storm” “Titanic” “Twister”

8 Bella Swan: Edward or Jacob?
Man vs. Himself This occurs when a character fights against his own values, conscience, or beliefs; the character has a mental struggle. Man vs. himself is an example of internal conflict. Examples: Bella Swan: Edward or Jacob?

9 Man vs. Society The conflict of man versus society is often represented by a person who is an outcast or by a character who tries to break the normal rules society has established.
