MAN VS. HIMSELF A struggle between a character and his feelings, conscience, or fear Internal Example: Auggie struggling with how he looks and being accepted by his peers.

MAN VS. SOCIETY Character struggles between the laws or beliefs of a group External Example: Katniss vs. The Capitol (The Hunger Games)

MAN VS. GOD Characters struggle against God. Example: Death of Jesus At three o’clock, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ‘Eloi Eloi, lema sabachtani?’ Which means, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’ Mark 15:34

FOUR TYPES OF CONFLICT FOLDABLE Label each piece of the foldable with conflict type and either Internal or External. Example: External Man vs. Man Cut out each piece separately, being careful to leave the tab on. Place all pieces into the notebook so that the points of the triangle meet up. Then glue each tab only down so that all pieces swing open at the middle. Write notes onto notebook paper under the tabs. Outline the center in color as you are filling in notes.

FOUR TYPES OF CONFLICT 1.Man vs. Man (external) * A struggle, mental or physical, between two characters *other character may be the antagonist 2.Man vs. Nature (external) * a struggle between a character and mother nature * Mother Nature = weather, animals, insects, sickness, epidemics 3.Man vs. Self (internal) * a struggle between a character and his feelings, conscience, or fear 4.Man vs. Society (external) * a struggle between a character and the laws or beliefs of a group * could involve poverty, politics social norms expectations, or values
