September 17, 2014 conflict H omework: Library on Friday! Objective: I can identify and evaluate the different types of conflict. Warm Up (in your notes) Copy today's date and the objective into your notes. Look up the definition of CONFLICT in the red glossary section of your Lit. book.

conflict t he problem or struggle a character faces in a story.

conflict

internal conflict (man vs. himself) A conflict that occurs within the character, such as making an important decision or facing a fear.

external conflict A conflict that occurs outside of the character, such as nature, a physical obstacle or another character.

man vs. nature Some force in nature creates an obstacle for the character.

man vs. society A conflict that occurs when a character disagrees with societal values, laws or beliefs.

man vs. man A conflict that occurs when a character has an argument, disagreement or some sort of struggle with another character.

Consider this example... When John first saw Raoul, he could tell they weren't going to get along. Raoul wore a jacket and a tie to school! John figured only a snob would come to school looking like that... Give an example of an internal and an external conflict that might develop as a result of this first impression.

Now take a look at the sheet listing several scenarios from the novel Holes. Read each example and write the type of conflict you think each one demonstrates. Holes

1. Stanley was often teased by other kids because he was overweight. Man vs. Society

2. Stanley was convicted of a crime he did not commit. Man vs. Society

3. The boys knew that the longer it took to dig their holes, the longer they would be out in the sun's heat. Man vs. Nature

4. Armpit shoves Stanley to the ground for calling him by his real name. Man vs. Man

5. At first, Stanley's hands are blistered and bloody from digging with the shovel. Man vs. Nature

6. Elya was in love with Myra Menke, but he could not compete with Igor's offer of his fattest pig. Man vs. Man

7. Elya told his wife, Sarah, that she should leave him because he was cursed. Man vs. Self

8. Stanley tried to pull himself out of the hole, but he was too exhausted. Man vs. Self

9. Stanley talks back when another boy confronts him in the "Wreck" Room. Man vs. Man

10. Stanley believed that they were not digging to build character. He felt they were digging to find something. He just didn't know what. Man vs. Self

So now you will work in your groups to write a 1-2 paragraph story opener using a picture of a setting along with a selected conflict. Your group must turn in one neatly written paper. Put all first and last names in the upper right hand corner Put the # of your picture and your conflict type on the top line If you have a person / people in your picture, use them as your character(s) Start off by describing the setting, and then move on to hinting at your conflict. Be descriptive - really describe the setting that you see and begin to describe a conflict that could occur in your setting.

All the boy could see were roses, bright pink-red exploding at the end of each stem by the dozens. Their blooms released a wonderful fragrance into the air that was carried by the gentle spring breeze from one end of the yard to the other. 10 giant rose bushes surrounded him, some taller than a grown man. They rose out of the massive stone structure on which the boy sat, a three tiered slope ascending up the side of the hill with a staircase of stone steps rising through the middle. The little boy sat happily on the edge of the stone step, smiling from ear to ear and soaking up every ray of the warm sun, which has only just recently begun to warm the air after a long and frigid winter. It was the first time in his life that had seen any blooming flower and to be surrounded by so many unfrozen petals was almost too good to be true. He hoped that this time spring would last for more than just a few hours, but little did he know that the Snow Queen was once again on the move throughout the land. Her attempt to turn the world back into an icy land of frost and snow would be just a few short hours away. Soon all of the blooms would be encased in a glassy coating of gleaming ice as the endless winter once again reemerged...
