DRAMATIC IRONY -when the audience knows something that one or more characters don’t SITUATIONAL IRONY -when there is a difference between what is expected to happen and what happens VERBAL IRONY -occurs when the speaker means something totally different (often the opposite) than what he or she is saying (sarcasm)

MONOLOGUE Long uninterrupted speeches where a character reveals his or her personality

PUN: play on words where a word has two meanings at the same time Eminem raps, “ Now you get to watch her leave /out the window/Guess that's why they call it window pane” He means a window glass pane in the window. But he also means its called a window pane because it sounds like pain and he’s in pain.

SIMILE: Comparing using “like” or “as”

SOLILOQUY a speech delivered by a character who is alone on the stage.

TRAGIC HERO A protagonist that is otherwise perfect except for a tragic flaw. (also known as a fatal flaw). This flaw eventually causes the character’s destruction.
