New Deal Revision What event happened in 1929? Wall Street Crash

What did this lead to? The Great Depression

Who was the President at the time? Herbert Hoover

What was a ‘Hooverville’? Poor shanty town, named after Herbert Hoover who was blamed for the Great Depression.

How did Hoover deal with the Depression? Government shouldn't interfere “Prosperity is just around the corner”

What was the New Deal? Programme of measures put together by Roosevelt to get America out of the Depression.

What were the aims of the New Deal? Relief Recovery Reform

How did FDR deal with the banks? Closed them all for a ‘four-day holiday’ Emergency Banking Act Only honest and well run banks allowed to reopen Supported by government loans Restored public’s confidence in banks

What were the Alphabet Agencies? Government agencies set up to give the American people help and support

What was the CCC? Civilian Conservation Corps Gave jobs to single men under 25 Clearing land, planting trees etc Cheap labour BUT not compulsory and men learnt new skills

What was the PWA? Public Works Administration Built schools, hospitals etc

What was the AAA? Paid farmers to produce less food This meant prices went up and their incomes doubled Helped farmers BUT not the sharecroppers who worked on their land (many Black) Many evicted as less work

What was the NRA? National Recovery Administration Help workers Set minimum wage Forbade child labour Workers had right to join trade unions

What was the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)? Set up to develop Tennessee Valley Covered 7 states Built 33 dams Planted new forests Land was improved Thousands of jobs created TVA became biggest provider of electricity in the US.
