DO NOW What is the “writing process”? What steps can you remember? (You may put an X in the Monday box. Also, get out your binder to be checked.)

The writing process… is a systematic approach to writing. Knowing and using the stages of the writing process will help you do your best on any writing project.

Prewriting Definition: thinking before writing or drafting What it looks like: making lists, webs, graphic organizers, free-writing, outlines, T-charts, 4 Square

Free Write! “Rules for Free writing” –Keep your pencil moving –No erasing –Don’t overthink it Begin with “I remember…”

Drafting Definition: first attempt at writing What it looks like: complete sentences, organized into paragraphs

Write a Draft… Choose an idea from your Free write to turn into a paragraph. Skip every other line.

Organizing and Responding Definition: self-evaluation and peer- evaluation of first drafts What it looks like: Closely re-reading drafts by yourself and/or by a peer – looking for BIG CHANGES that need to be made

DO NOW Describe the steps of the writing process that we discussed yesterday.

Organizing/Responding Read over your paragraph. –Does it have a topic sentence (that does NOT begin with “I remember”)? If not, make a note at the top. –Does it have at least 3 detail sentences? If not, make a note at the top. –Does it have a conclusion? If not, make a note at the top.

Exchange your paragraph with a friend. –Write a note at the bottom of the paragraph making note of one good thing you see in paragraph and one thing that could use improvement. Focus on “Big Stuff”!!

Revising Definition: making changes to your draft What it looks like: rewriting, adding text, deleting text, changing order/organization, making other big changes on a work

Revise Your Paragraph by… Read over the changes you and your partner suggested. Make any needed changes.

Proof-reading and Editing Definition: checking draft for minor but meaningful details What it looks like: fixing errors in spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc.

Common Proofing Symbols Writers and editors use proofing symbols to make corrections to their work. You should become familiar with these proofing symbols. It is expected that you will use them…. In addition, all of your teachers will use them to give you feedback regarding your writing.

Make a Final Draft Create a final draft of your paragraph.

Important!! These steps may seem sequential, but writers often move among the various stages as they work. For example, as reporters draft news stories, they often discover that they must return to their prewriting work to gather more information.

Homework Write a paragraph (with at least 5 sentences) about anything you like. Purposefully make at least 5 errors in it. Skip every other line.

Exit Question What step of the writing process do you think you need to spend more time on? –Have you neglected any in the past??
