Jefferson & the courts much of the bitterness between the Federalists & Republicans resulted from a fight over control of the federal courts

Marbury v. Madison - John Marshall (chief justice) – extended the power of the court & broadened federal power at the expense of the states

Marbury v. Madison Continued - established JUDICIAL REVIEW 1. Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land 2. When there is a conflict between the law & the constitution, the Constitution must be followed 3. The Judicial branch has a duty to uphold the Constitution

Louisiana Purchase - In 1803 Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory from France for $15 Million; DOUBLED the size of the U.S.

Partner Talk Jefferson was a Democratic – Republican. Democratic – Republicans believed in a strict interpretation of the constitution, which is why Jefferson almost didn’t purchase the Louisiana Territory. Even though the constitution doesn’t specifically say the president can buy land – discuss at least 3 reasons why you think Jefferson chose to make this important purchase.
