Workplace Writing

A reminder of dates… DRAFTS – by Monday Week 2 All 6 pieces of writing Oral presentation draft Deadline – Friday 30 th April, Week 3 (revised deadline) All 6 tasks, polished Oral presentation – recorded and submitted on USB or CD + transcript of oral + cue cards Drafts of your pieces + context statement (to be summarised in your oral)

Criteria for Judging Performance understanding • How well does the student recognise the conventions, structures, and features of the chosen form ofexpression or communication? • To what extent does the student demonstrate an understanding of how the conventions of a particular form of expression or communication shape texts or the communication process?

How do you show this? Conventions/ structures/ features – this means you must show that you know the rules of each piece of writing by annotating both the samples and your documents Shaping the communication process – this means you show that you understand that following the rules is important to get your message across effectively

Criteria for Judging Performance application • How effectively does the student apply skills in producing an example of a chosen form of expression or communication? • How effectively does the student engage in a process that requires participation in a form of expression or communication? • How imaginative and original are the texts produced by the student? • How versatile is the student in producing texts for different contexts, audiences, and purposes?

How do you do this? Follow the rules of the text types and state that you are following them Try to stand out (but not at the expense of clear communication) Create a range of texts aimed at different groups of people (e.g. clients, fellow workers, council, etc) and change the language you use to suit them Engage in a process = pace the task, annotate and draft!

Criteria for Judging Performance evaluation • To what extent does the student evaluate how effectively he or she applied the conventions of the chosen form of expression or communication?

How do you do this? List off the choices that you make as you make them Reflect on them in your oral presentation Why did you make these choices? How do they aid in the effectiveness of the communication?

Brainstorm! Brainstorm all the choices you could make in a variety of possible text types Brainstorm all the choices you have made so far on a page in your book. Try and think of why these choices make your pieces more effective

Criteria for Judging Performance communication • How accurate and fluent is the student’s expression? • How appropriate are the student’s form and register for the audience and purpose?

How do you do this? Check that the language you are using suits your audience (writing AND oral presentation) Read your writing aloud to check for mistakes and expression issues – to yourself and someone else

Tips COLLECT SAMPLES FROM REAL BUSINESSES – This is an expectation for this task. It will be very obvious if you haven’t. Write notes identifying the form rules in the sample documents, and in your own Keep all drafts Keep a journal of your thoughts, challenges and choices as you go Talk to each other about the assignment Test your writing on people who don’t know you did it – can they tell? Don’t forget your oral – half your marks are based on this! Keep in touch with me! Don’t leave me out of the loop. I get scared…

Feedback Where have you found samples of the possible pieces of writing? Where have you found information on the rules of the text type? What problems are you facing, or have you faced? How might you solve these problems?
