SAA 9.2 What do you know? 1. Asian Americans are too passive in temperament to be effective business leaders. 2. Most Asian Americans are more Asian than American. 3. Asian Americans tend to be unemotional. 4. Early Asian immigrants were considered nonwhite and had to cope with segregation and other forms of discrimination. 5. Most Asian Americans are from China. 6. Traditional Asian Americans expect the manager to be “one of the guys.” 7. The “model minority” label means Asian Americans adapt to the American workplace better than other minorities.

Myths & Stereotypes #1: Asian Americans tend to retain their foreign ways. #2: Asian Americans are unemotional and inscrutable. #3: Asian Americans are too passive and polite to be good managers. #4: Asian Americans have learned how to make it in American society by working hard and being thrifty. #5: Asian Americans can’t seem to master English; they have communication problems. #6: Asian Americans are good in technical occupations, but they don’t have leadership potential. #7: Asian Americans know about all things Asian.
