2 Contextual Inquiry “The core premise of CI is very simple: go where the customer works, observe the customer as he or she works, and talk to the customer about the work. Do that, and you can’t help but gain a better undertanding of your customer”

3 Types of models in Contextual Design Flow models – Individuals, who is involved – Responsibilities belonging to each individual – Groups of people with the same responsibilities – Flow, how people communicate to get the work done – Artefacts – the “things” that are processed or support the work – The communication topic or action

4 Flow models – Places – Breakdowns – problems in communication and coordination

5 Sequence models The intent (or purpose) The trigger that causes the sequence of actions, e.g. Why the sequence action is taken A series of steps Any breakdowns or problems

6 Artefact model The information content itself, e.g. The rooms booked and guest details in the bookings diary The structure of the object, i.e. parts Informal annotation of the artefact, e.g. The use of post-it notes and handwritten notes The presentation of the artefact – the general style Note any aspects that change over time Finally, any breakdowns

7 Physical model A representation of where the work takes place – The physical structures of the workplace – Movement within the workplace – Communications and computer technologies and networks – The location of key artefacts – The layout of the workplace – Finally, breakdowns

8 Exercise Create an artefact and physical model for using local transportation, e.g. bus, tram etc.

9 Exercise Create a flow model for – Planning a trip and travel locally a bus, tram – Planning a trip and travel a longer distance, e.g. Train, Plane Choose two activities and create a sequence model
