2 Teachers Being Fired!  Unprofessionalism  Inappropriate teacher / student communication  Teacher / Student Relations

3 Goal:  Inform novice teachers about the current standards of “professionalism” in the workplace and on the internet.  Identify, understand, and incorporate appropriate teacher / student communication on the web.

4 Goal 1: “Standards”  Identify National and State standards  Discuss how they are relevant through digital communication.  Discuss any “eye opening” guidelines that you may not have known about

5 There are 4 Lists of “Standards”  National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education proposed Standards (NCATE)  National Educational Technology Standards (ISTE)  Association of American Educators (AAE)  Texas Administrative Code

6 NCATE  Standard 1: Candidate Knowledge, Skills, and Professional Dispositions Candidates preparing to work in schools as teachers or other school professionals know and demonstrate the content knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and skills, pedagogical and professional knowledge and skills, and professional dispositions necessary to help all students learn. Assessments indicate that candidates meet professional, state, and institutional standards.

7 NCATE Standard 1g  Professional Dispositions for all Candidates Target: “Candidates demonstrate classroom behaviors that create caring and supportive learning environments and encourage self-directed learning by all students. Candidates recognize when their own professional dispositions may need to be adjusted and are able to develop plans to do so.”

8 What does Standard 1g mean?  Create a caring environments with “self directed” learning.  Self Directed Learning (SDL): the learner takes the initiative to direct their own learning through activities.  In todays age SDL means using Media, Technology, Internet, Presentations!!!

10 AAE / Texas Administrative Code of Ethics  Will work in teams to understand the Code of Ethics  Find the AAE or Texas Administrative Code of Ethics for Educators Handout depending on your team.  Read the handout and highlight any standard that incorporates professionalism or communication with students.  On a blank poster sheet: identify the standard, summarize the standard, and present your findings.

11 Code of Ethics “Eye Opener” AAE Principle 1: Ethical Conduct toward Students 2. The professional educator does not intentionally expose the student to disparagement.

12 Code of Ethics “Eye Opener” Texas Administrative Code Standard 3: Ethical Conduct Toward Students Standard 3.9: The educator shall refrain from inappropriate communication with a student or minor, including, but not limited to, electronic communication such as cell phone, text messaging, email, instant messaging, blogging, or other social network communication.

16 Appropriateness?  Who deems digital communication as appropriate?  Nation?  State?  District?  Administration?  Educator?  Student?

17 District Guidelines  Because of the many cases between what is “Inappropriate” use of digital communication between teachers and students, districts started producing social Media Guidelines.  What are some things to think about when producing a District Social Media Guideline? (in your groups, discuss three ideas to include in a social media guideline.)

18 Sample District Social Media Guideline  Look at your own district social media guideline or the sample that is included.  Mostly review the guidelines between teacher / student interaction  “If you would not bring it into the classroom, do not post it online!”

19 Other ways to communicate  Many educators understand the desire of a program for teachers to effectively communicate with students digitally.  Edmodo  Demo on homepage

20 Edmodo  Make your own login (be a student).  Log into the Professional Development’s Edmodo group (yij7td)  Within the group, there are a few assignments to identify how teachers will be looked upon on social media profiles from the eyes of students.  Reply to each assignment and finish by answering the Exit Poll.
