The Mughal Empire – Question 1 - A strong Muslim Empire that had ruled during the 16th-18 th century -Akbar - First Muslim ruler of Mughal Empire was very tolerant of Hindus.

End of Mughal Rule – Question 1 At first, India’s ruling Mughal Dynasty kept European traders under control. dividedDecline of the Mughals began with religious conflict between Muslims and Hindus and resulted in infighting and a divided empire By 1707, however, the Mughal Empire was collapsing. Dozens of small states, each headed by a ruler or maharajah, broke away from Mughal control.

British East India Company A British trading company that basically ran India. Created to facilitate trade but eventually gained much power controlling laws & taxes further eroding Mughal power. By 1750, company controlled an area that included modern Bangladesh, most of southern India, and nearly all the territory along the Ganges River in the north. From 1750-1857 controlled even more of India and modern Pakistan

Sepoy Mutiny 1857 – Question 4 East India company even had its own army, led by British officers and staffed by sepoys, or Indian soldiers. British became a threat to Indian’s lives

Sepoy Mutiny – Question 4 Mangal Pandey leader in rebellion Sepoy rebelled against East India Company rule Divide and conquer strategy had worked well for the British –Religious differences offered an easy way to divide Hindus from Muslims British government took direct control to protect their valuable trading empire and ruled from 1858 to 1947 The mutiny increased distrust between the British and the Indians.

Resentment of British Rule second-class citizens in their own country. Even Indians with a European education faced discrimination. barred from top posts in the Indian Civil Service. paid less than Europeans.

Beginnings of Indian Nationalism The new Indian middle classes slowly grew tired of the injustice of British rule The new nationalists turned to aspects of Indian tradition, especially Hinduism, as a rallying ground for national pride –Ignored or overlooked Muslim leaders 1885 – a large group of these new Indian nationalists founded the Indian National Congress Gandhi took over the leadership of this congressional movement in 1920
