3 Maurya Empire Founded by Chandragupta Maurya when he was only 20 years old Developed a trading network across South Asia – Created a system of finance, administration, and security Ashoka the Great (the grandson of Chandragupta Maurya) spread the teachings of Buddha – After witnessing a devastating war that killed thousands, he renounced war and violence

4 Gupta Empire Lasted 320-550 AD (about 230 years) Founded by Maharaja Sri-Gupta

5 Gupta Empire Many inventions and scientific discoveries – Called the “Golden Age of India” Developed Arabic numerals, the basis of our number system – Further developed the number system of the Indus Valley Civilization

8 Fall of the Mughal Empire In the late 1700s, the Empire began to lose power. This was due to: – Wars of succession (people wanting to be free) – Food shortages and famine – Invaders from Persia – British Colonization of India finally ended the Mughal Empire for good in 1858
