Ethical guidelines that govern the use of human subjects in research are a fairly new, but important, construct developing after unethical and harmful experiments such as the Tuskegee syphilis experiment. As a result of various experiments and unethical episodes in United States history, several organizations were put in place to help monitor clinical research involving humans. At most colleges and universities, institutional review boards, also known as ethics committees, are formally chosen to approve, review, and monitor bio- medical and behavioral research involving humans. Key ethical guidelines include the assurance of confidentiality, informed consent, and debriefing. Ethical Guidelines for Human Research Free to share, print, make copies and changes. Whether researching on humans or animals, an experiment's design and application must be ethical; however, how we define "ethical" across species is the subject of much debate. While a person can consent to participating in research after being informed of its goals and methods (and this is in fact a mandatory guideline for ethical research among humans), this is not a possibility for animals. From a purely economic standpoint, many argue that animal research is more affordable and economically sound than research conducted on humans. One main argument surrounding animal testing is on the basis of whether or not animals have rights, and whether or not they should be granted legal rights to be protected. The principles of replacement, reduction, and refinement are used to guide more ethical use of animals in testing and research. Sampling bias is when the sample in question is not representative of the general population. Selection bias occurs when the participants in the sample are not equally and fairly selected for both the experimental and control groups; this renders any results meaningless. Response bias is when only highly motivated people return a survey. When this occurs, the resulting data is biased toward those with the motivation to answer and submit and is therefore not representative of the population as a whole. External validity is the ability to apply conclusions gathered from the results of an experiment to the general population. Data sets with little variability have values that are similar to each other; data sets with high variability have values that are more spread out.
