What makes someone a person? LO: I will explore the concept of ‘personhood.’ HOMEWORK: Read through the Bowie handout and complete the Tasks pg 194 and 196/7. Produce written answers to bring with you to next Monday’s lesson.

‘If God gave us the power of reason, didn’t he intend us to use it to make medical advances?’ Before the exams in the summer, you will learn how to apply ethical theories to: ▫The different issues raised by abortion and whether a child is a right or a gift ▫The ‘sanctity of life’ concept, the ‘quality of life’ argument and the right to euthanasia ▫Genetic engineering and the ethical implications of its use ▫The concept of war and pacifism and evaluate the principles of Just War
3
What do you think? Why is abortion so controversial?
4
Bowie raises the following issues: ▫Sex is seen as more for pleasure than procreation ▫Women have a greater social and legal status in society compared to the unborn child ▫Low child mortality (babies who die young) has reduced the need for so many children ▫Technological advances have made it easier to detect foetal abnormalities before birth ▫Abortion is commonplace in many countries. Although it is legalised, its morality is disputed. ▫Religious organisations tend to campaign against the availability of abortion, whereas women’s rights groups campaign for greater access Key question: Should it be forbidden, or are there cases when it becomes acceptable?
5
Key terms to learn! Sanctity of life ▫Life is sacred & God given and worthy of special respect Quality of life ▫What someone’s life is like. Is it of a good quality (healthy, happy) or poor quality (deprived, lots of suffering). Inalienable rights ▫Natural rights which can never be taken away e.g. The right to life Acquired rights ▫Rights gained over time e.g. Order a alcoholic beverage at the pub once turning 18.

The stages of development … Using the CMF article on ‘what is a person’ your task is to read through the section on ‘Biological development’ and complete the following: ▫Design a table on the development of a foetus, including the reasons (and counterarguments) for giving moral consideration/rights to a foetus.

FERTILISATION (24 hours): From the moment a sperm and egg unite, we have a new human being. Because it is a member of the human species, gives him or her the status of a person. Is should therefore be treated with the same rights. NEURAL PLATE (17 days): This is when the nervous system starts to develop. The embryo develops a limited sense of consciousness and feeling? IMPLANTATION (5-14 days): From the moment of implantation, the maternal-embryonic relationship begins. The mother-child bond has started to develop. VIABILITY (22 weeks): A baby can survive outside the womb, with additional special care. FOETUS (7 weeks): All organs are in place. Some religions, such as Islam, believe this to be the point when the embryo becomes ‘ensouled.’ WHEN DOES LIFE BEGIN???
