4 Civil War 1861-1865 North: Yankees vs. South: Confederates Abraham Lincoln: North President Jefferson Davis: South President North wins after more than 620,000 troops had been killed Land in absolute desolation 4,000,000 slaves gain freedom

5 “ The United States are …” Prior to civil war, The United States focused more on individual states rather than the “ Union. ” Slavery was in place longer in the south than the north “ A house divided against itself cannot stand ” – Lincoln Post Civil War: “ The United States is …”

7 Civil Rights Movement All Men are created equal and therefore should have equal rights within society The end of slavery was only the beginning of a long battle for equal rights for African Americans Many literary figures both Black and white fought during this time for equality and justice.

8 Literature Some of the most vivid accounts of slavery and the civil war comes from fiction. Gone with the Wind, Uncle Tom ’ s Cabin, and the Red Badge of Courage. A time fore African Americans to come forth as literary artists. Prominent authors fights for Civil Rights: Thoreau, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglas, and Walt Whitman.
