2 Texas A&M University at Galveston, States of Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas Accomplishments FY09 Grant Title: Construction of tsunami inundation maps in the Gulf of Mexico Total Funding Received $70,958 Accomplishments –Construction of tsunami landslide sources in three locations along the GOM continental shelf. (see details on next 2 slide) Issues –Bad news: Unsuccessful in the process to hire a PhD. student for the Fall_2009 semester… so PI was forced to do the work. –Good news: We got a PhD student (Amanda Wood) for the Spring and Summer 2010 semesters to do the work.

Horrillo Emergency Management Representative (EM Rep): Charles Williams Accomplishment OutcomeStrategyScheduleTasksExecution By:, Cost and % Done Develop initial condition grids for submarine landslide scenarios based on parameters defined in NRC report as input to numerical modeling. Compilation of all publicly- available bathymetry/topography, documents & research papers on the topic prior to execute this activity. Sept. 1 to Sep. 11 2009 Research literature & NRC report studies. PI $0.0, 100% PI $0.0 100% PI $0.0 100% Sep. 14 to Sep. 30 2009 Obtain GOM bathymetric and topographic data. Oct. 5 to Oct. 23 2009 Determine location and shape (from landslide mapping) of seabottom initial deformation for each case scenario. Execute analysis of submarine landslide scenarios to determine static and dynamic initial tsunami wave configurations. Collection and review of all technical references on the subject. Oct. 26 to Nov. 20 2009 Determine simple tsunami wave configuration based on volume and morphology of the subsea landslide. PI $0.0 100% PI $0.0 100% PI $0.0 50% Submit computer model jobs to University of Alaska (UAF) or Texas A&M (TAMU) Supercomputer. Nov. 23 to Dec. 11 2009 Model 2D debris flow analysis (Newtonian and Bingham viscous- plastic behaviors) to determine dynamic tsunami wave configuration. Post-processing: plotting initial wave profile, result comparisons and landslide evolution (movies).

Horrillo Emergency Management Representative (EM Rep): Charles Williams Accomplishment (Continuation) OutcomeStrategyScheduleTasksExecution By:, Cost and %Done Perform preliminary large-scale calculation using “low resolution” numerical models (hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic) to determine regions along the US coast of GOM with higher tsunami impact for the given landslide scenarios. Three case submarine landslide scenarios and two different models for wave propagation (hydrostatic and non- hydrostatic) are used. Dec. 14 to Jan. 29 2009/2010 Develop initial GOM global grids and locate numerical gauges at predetermined critical locations along coastline. PI $0.0 50%

The outcome of this project will be added to the list of tsunami evacuation map contributing in the goal of annually increase the number of tsunami evacuation maps by 10%. It is expected two or three additional tsunami inundation maps will be constructed during Aug 2010 - Jul 2011. $115.000
