Diagnostic test for MPLS transport profile draft-flh-mpls-tp-oam-diagnostic-test-01 IETF78, Maastricht, 25th-30th, July, 2010 Feng Huang ( Alcatel Lucent) Lieven Levrau (Alcatel Lucent) Han Li (China Mobile) Ruiquan Jing (China Telecom)

Update from 00 to 01 Draft-00 was created in October 2009 Draft 01 was created in May 2010. Detail description on out-of-service test

General overview Chapter 2.2.5 of RFC5860 describe diagnostic tools’ requirement Chapter 6.3.of draft-ietf-mpls-tp-oam-framwork provides diagnostic tools’ framework Diagnostic Test provides on demand tools of one way or two way in-service or out-of-service performance diagnostic test such as bandwidth, throughput, frame loss, bit errors etc, on pw, lsp and section layers.

A MEP inserts TST packets towards its peer MEPs, with MPLS-TP test information as specified throughput (i.e. a provisioned transmission rate for TST packets), packet size, bit errors and transmission patterns. The receiving MEP detects these TST packets and performs the intended measurements. When “out-of-service” MPLS-TP test function is performed, client data traffic is disrupted in the diagnosed entity (and LCK info is communicated towards client layer). When an “in-service” MPLS-TP test function is performed, data traffic is not disrupted and the packets with MPLS-TP test information are transmitted up to a pre-determined part of the service bandwidth (provisioned rate). TST Process

Example-out of service throughput estimation 1.LCK the transport path, MEPs periodically transmit Alarm packets to indicate that path is in LCK state 2.Source MEP sending OAM test packets at increasing rate (up to the theoretical maximum), graphing the percentage of OAM test packets received and reporting the rate at which OAM test packets begin to drop. Client MEP T R TST MEP TST applied to a Path MEP  TST packets transmitted to peer MEP (e.g. PRBS @ configured rate) If out-of-service, then client traffic disrupted  LCK & Alarm LCK frames to client layer (out-of-service test) R T R Tx side (source) Rx side (sink) TST T LCK MEP Defect detection at client MEP LCK Alarm (out-of-service) Alarm (out-of-service) Client MEP
