Carlos V cont’d Carlos V did not speak Spanish He fought for the religious unity of Spain and the Americas Under Carlos V, Mexico, Peru, Panamá and many other Spanish regions

In 1555 Carlos retired to a monastery to pray and prepare his life for death He abdicated the Spanish throne to his son Felipe II Under his rule, Spain created the Invincible Army in 1597 to fight against the British

Spain’s citizens began to suffer because the could not produce enough food for their population, due to a lack of farmers Exports of live animals, wool, and silk were on a steady decline

Felipe II cont’d Spain’s Economy was bankrupt, its military deplete and as a result she began to lose political sway In place of governing, Spain’s rulers hunted, went to theatrical productions, threw parties, and spent the nation’s money wildly

Decline of Spain Before too long, Spain began losing its power and influence as a world Super- power In 1640 – 1652 Spain suffered its first civil war

Francisco Franco Franco was a dictator who ruled Spain for 36 years Franco had on his side the army, many priests, and the upper class

Rule of Franco Franco’s opponents were the Liberals consisting of working class, the intellectuals, and poor farmers

Spanish Civil War The cause of the Civil War was not for land, but ideological – the left against the right They called themselves the Nationalists led by Franco, and the Republicans (Reds)

The Mini- World War The Spanish Civil war was sometimes referred to as a mini-’World War, because Hitler and Mussolini joined in favor of Franco, while Russia and Mexico funneled arms to the Republicans/Reds to fight against Franco

Spanish Civil War 40 000 international fighters entered Spain to fight against Franco, including 3000 volunteer Americans who called themselves the Lincoln Brigade

Many international countries tried not to get officially involved, but were secretly arming the Republicans against Franco Due to the indiscipline of the Republicans, the Nationalists won the 3 year war

Consequences of the War About 200 000 were assassinated for political or social reasons About 1 million Spanish citizens were forced to leave Spain

Civil War Dead There were no exact count of the dead, but historians believe that about 1 million lives were lost in the Spanish Civil war

Civil War Cont’d Half a million houses and churches were destroyed 3 bishops and 7 000 clergymen were killed by the Republicans 16 Basque priests were executed by the Nationalists

Civil War Cont’d After the final battle, 200 000 people were shot by the Nationalists All Spain’s economic and financial resources were depleted after the Civil war After the war, the Spanish remained divided in two camps: The Defeated and the Victorious

Post Civil War Spain After the Spanish Civil War, Francisco Franco established a totalitarian government He continued his repressive tactics for years against those who opposed him Franco reigned in Spain until his death in 1975

ETA – cont’d ETA is a group that until recently fought for the separation of the Basque country from Spain. ETA stand for land and liberty for the Basque people

ETA – Euskadi Ta Askatsuna ETA fought valiantly against Franco and their tactics included kidnappings, murders, bombings and assaults

ETA – Cont’d In 1973, ETA assassinated the prime minister of Spain Earlier in 2011, ETA has decided to enter into a ceasefire with the authorities in Spain

Present Day Spanish Politics Spain moved to a Constitutional Monarchy in 1975 with a bicameral system made up of: King Prime Minister House of Representatives Senate
