Subject –Verb agreement

What is a subject? a subject is the part of a sentence that tells what or who the sentence is about. Ex. Luis walked to the cafeteria. Who walked to the cafeteria? Luis

What is a verb? A verb is a word that tells what people or things do. Words that show action. Ex. Gissel bought a book. What did Gissel do? bought

Present: singular subject Verbs that tells about something that is happening Right NOW. Add –s to the verb when the noun in the subject is singular. ex. The dog barks at night.

Present: plural subject Plural subject means more than 1 subject. do not add –s to the verb when the noun in the subject is plural. Ex. The boys shovel the snow away.

Is the subject singular or plural? 1. My cousins (loves, love) cold weather. 2. Luis (make, makes) big snowballs. 3. The boys (race, races) to the park. 4. Annette (get, gets) the jump rope.

Write each sentence. Choose the correct verb in (). 1. A chipmunk (run, runs) up a tree. 2. The horses (gallop, gallops) fast. 3. Rabbits (jump, jumps) into the bushes. 4. A bear (climb, climbs) trees.

Make a list of 4 animals Next to each name write a verb that tells how the animal moves. Use this list to write a sentence about each animal. Make sure you use present tense. Read your sentences to your group without the verb. Your group will guess what your verb is.
