7-1.1 European Territories Each European Power (Mother Country) claimed land and made colonies in different areas of the Americas They conquered Native Americans (guns, horses and disease) British->East Coast of USA and Northwestern Canada Dutch->Small areas in eastern South America French->Canada and along Mississippi River Spanish-> Central America and Western South America Portuguese-> Eastern South America

7-1.5 Types of Colonies Colony- land that a country rules beyond its own borders Indentured Servant- someone who works as a slave in a colony for a few years in order to get a trip to the new world

Trading Post Colony: make profit through trade. France did fur trade with natives in North America. Dutch in South America Plantation Colony- Large farms to grow cash crops. French and Dutch grew sugar cane in the Caribbean. English grew tobacco, rice, indigo on coast of North America. Spain used natives as slaves. British used indentured servants and slaves from Africa. Settler Colony: Sent a large number of people to live there as a permanent home. They spread Christianity and created governments. English at Jamestown. 3 Types of Colonies Built in the Americas

7-1.5 Colonies in the Americas Spain and Portugal: trade of gold and silver, plantation colonies. Slavery of native Americans and Africans (Encomienda system) Government: viceroys, royal representative ran colony Religion: spread Catholicism Conquistadors: explorers that conquered land like, Pizarro and Cortez, were rewarded

England: plantation colonies (tobacco, rice, indigo and sugar) Used indentured servants and then African slaves. Government: Representative assemblies: colonists could elect representatives to make decisions (charters-contracts gave colonists rights) Religion: spread Protestantism

France and Netherlands: trading posts with natives. French and Indian War-> Britain gained a lot of Frances land Government: not very strict and colonists got to make most political decisions Coureurs de bois- French that traveled and lived with Native Americans

7-1.5 European Influence in Africa Very few European countries made colonies in Africa Europeans went to buy slaves for American plantations Europeans traded weapons, iron, cloth and horses for slaves Negative Effects on Africa African tribes increased war Population decreased in Africa and there weren’t enough workers Families separated Some resistance began but it wasn’t very successful

Triangular Trade: Exchange of goods between Europe, Africa and Americas Europe sent manufactured goods (cloth, weapons, etc) to Africa Slaves were sent from Africa to Americas Raw materials (sugar, tobacco, cotton etc) were sent from Americas to Europe Middle Passage: path that Africans traveled to the Americas, terrible conditions

7-1.5 European Influence in Asia Asia was different than the new world: strong military, stable governments Europeans and Asians focused on trade No major European colonies Missionaries spread Christianity and Asians didn’t like it Asian countries started isolationism ending trade with Europeans to protect their culture
