Sabbath Legalism During Christ’s Ministry Exodus 20:10- “but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work…” Breaking the Sabbath is very serious business! There were big consequences for Sabbath breakers! What is considered work? The religious leaders identified 39 basic categories of “work.” Then, they gave specific instruction for what could and could not be done in each of these 39 categories. For example: reaping, threshing, winnowing, preparing a meal and lifting a burden were all considered work. You can’t lift a burden on the Sabbath. How much is a burden? A burden is anything that weighs more than two dried figs! This is legalism out of control!

The Secret of God’s Sabbath It is a declaration of complete trust that God is capable of running the universe without their help! It is a living testimony of their confidence that God can provide (in just six days of labor). It is an awareness that slowing down to meet with God and his people is a life priority.
