Framing The Session In this session, you will be introduced to the suggested student project that is part of the iTeach/iLearn 6th grade unit of study Egypt: Then and Now. This four- to six-week unit is part of the 6th grade Social Studies curriculum that is aligned with the New York State Learning Standards in Social Studies. The iTeach/iLearn edition has more in-depth technology connections than the one posted on the New York City Department of Social Studies Web site.

Table of Contents This part includes sample lesson plans that teachers can customize. This part also includes additional resources for the teacher. This part can be copied onto the student’s laptop. This part also has a special handout for the student that just focuses on the suggested final project. This part provides an overview of this unit of study.

About the suggested Final PowerPoint Project The PowerPoint travel guide will provide insight into what life was like and is like in Egypt, thus demonstrating evidence of what it means for a society to progress. Places to go, people to see, things to do, and cultural facts to be noted can be researched throughout the unit as independent lessons and incorporated into the final project. The travel guide provides an opportunity for students to reflect back on the unit and elevate the most essential content. In addition to reflecting on the unit, students will present the travel guide to bring an audience into the learning process. Travel guides can be displayed, given to other classes, presented to parents, friends and family, and donated to the school’s permanent library collection for all to read. This page provides a brief description of the student project and why we have chosen it for this project. This project uses PowerPoint as the tool to combine reading, writing, technology, and research.

Sample Lesson Plans This is one of the sample lesson plans included in this unit. These lessons are designed to be customized and enriched at the school level during grade-level meetings.

Teacher Background Resources There are many teacher resources listed in this unit of study. For the One-to-One schools, there are many internet sites offered for the teacher background knowledge.

Suggested Project Rubrics The 6 th Grade Unit of Study also includes sample rubrics so students can gain a clear idea of what is expected. We’re going to take a closer look at these in Session #2.

Guided Practice Now it is your turn to try it. Download the Student Project Checklist and read it on their own. Discuss the Student Project Checklist and talk about how you have used similar project ideas in helping 6th grade students gain content knowledge.

I will be showing them a sample PowerPoint Travel Brochure so that everyone can see what this project might look like. Think about the following question: “What do the students need to know in order to create a similar project?”

Work Time At your table, share/discuss your thoughts in relation to the focusing questions. At your tables, discuss a few of the ideas they had after discussing the focusing question. Highlight the components that you know this project will be including both content and technology points (e.g., how to make a PowerPoint, Internet research, finding images, etc.).

Let’s watch the PowerPoint Travel Brochure again and this time, think about if this sample is effective or not and the reasons why or why not. Discuss this at your tables. Make a list of the technology and research skills that students would need to complete such a project. Share-out some of your thoughts and start to collect them. Share
