I NTRODUCTION The Lord presented a plan for financing the work of the church in the New Testament Scriptures. According to God’s plan it must be put into operation by the faithful Christians in a local work. The obligation is an individual one. We must work the plan and the plan will work.

T HE I NDIVIDUAL IN G OD ’ S P LAN : Giving to be an individual matter. “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE I NDIVIDUAL IN G OD ’ S P LAN : Individual enterprise to make it possible. Church is not to enter some business enterprise in order to finance it’s work. “That you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” {1 Thessalonians 4:11,12}

T HE I NDIVIDUAL IN G OD ’ S P LAN : Individual enterprise to make it possible. Church is not to enter some business enterprise in order to finance it’s work. “For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies.” {1 Thessalonians 4:10,11}

T HE I NDIVIDUAL IN G OD ’ S P LAN : Individual enterprise to make it possible. Church is not to enter some business enterprise in order to finance it’s work. “Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” {Ephesians 4:28}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : A divine command. “ Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.” {Matthew 5:42} “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.” {Luke 6:38}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : Helping the poor will obtain the Lord’s help. “Blessed is he who considers the poor ; The LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. The LORD will preserve him and keep him alive, And he will be blessed on the earth; You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.” {Psalm 41:1,2}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : Make us God like. “But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return ; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.” {Luke 6:35,36}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It enlarges the heart when sincerely done and purifies it of petty scruples and follies. “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.” {Luke 11:39-41}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It lends acceptance to our prayers. “And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, "What is it, lord?" So he said to him, Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” {Acts 10:4}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : A means of laying up treasure in heaven. “Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.” {1 Timothy 6:18,19}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It opens for those who practice it the doorway into the bounties of God’s grace. “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” {Galatians 6:8-10}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It opens for those who practice it the doorway into the bounties of God’s grace. “For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.” {Galatians 6:8-10}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It opens for those who practice it the doorway into the bounties of God’s grace. “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” {2 Corinthians 9:6}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It is the means of glorifying God. “For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men.” {2 Corinthians 9:12,13}

T HE M OTIVE I N G IVING : It is the way to always be happy. “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.” {Acts 20:35}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : The New Testament plan… “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : PERIODIC “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : PERSONAL “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : PROVIDENT “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : PROPORTIONATE “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

T HE M ANNER OF G IVING : PREVENTIVE “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:1,2}

N OTE : Sometimes it’s argued that this is the plan for raising money only for benevolences in the church. It remains, however, that the divine wisdom that led Paul to give this plan to Corinth for raising money and good reasoning will convince one that if it will work in raising money for one righteous cause, it will work for another and for all!

O THER P RINCIPLES G OVERNING THE M ATTER OF G IVING : Voluntary, the free will offering of the willing heart and an open hand “ not grudgingly, nor of necessity.” “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity ; for God loves a cheerful giver.” {2 Corinthians 9:7}

O THER P RINCIPLES G OVERNING THE M ATTER OF G IVING : Purposeful, planned, systematic. “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” {2 Corinthians 9:7}

N OTE : The church should have a planned program of work and every Christian should have a planned program of giving toward making that work possible. Work of the church: – Evangelism – Edification – Benevolence of Needy Saints

O THER P RINCIPLES G OVERNING THE M ATTER OF G IVING : Confidently. He who believes God’s promises can give liberally without any fear of suffering. “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. As it is written: "He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever. Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness.” {2 Corinthians 9:8-10}

M EASURE OF G IVING : Measure by ability— ” as prospered.” Accepted according to ability.” “For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and not according to what he does not have.” {2 Corinthians 8:12}

M EASURE OF G IVING : Bountifully, not sparingly. “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” {2 Corinthians 9:6}

M EASURE OF G IVING : The grace of liberality. Not how little but how much can we give and how great is the need… “That in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded in the riches of their liberality.” {2 Corinthians 8:2} “But as you abound in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us--see that you abound in this grace also.” {8:7}
