G042 - Lecture 11 Accessing Information on Large Websites (Task B) Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher www.computechedu.co.uk

Session Objectives Know different facilities which can be used to find information on a large website, Know how internal search facilities can assist finding information on large websites, Present evidence for both tasks c and d of the unit by using an internal search engine effectively.

Large Websites In task a you will have found some large websites with useful information for your brief, Task b requires you to explore these sites so you have relevant facts / information which can be “presented” later in the unit, Facilities to find information on large websites includes: Menus, hotspots, navigation bars, hyperlinks, Internal search facilities, Online databases You need to document using each of these for task b.

Task B Instructions Write down the information which need to find, Show that you have found relevant information using menus, navigation, hotspots, hyperlinks etc… (MB1) Show that you have also found relevant information using internal search facilities (MB2) Show that you have also found relevant information using online database forms (MB3)

Internal Search Facilities Many websites have internal search facilities to help you find: Web pages with your required criteria on Specific data from a database attached to the site Using an internal search can help you find the information you need in a quick and efficient way

Using Internal Search Facilities You should have already found some useful websites – now use internal search facilities to find data which will help you with your investigation, Most don’t support the use of logical operators used in task a, so don’t use them, Some have advanced search facilities – these are used in a similar fashion to normal search engines… Pull down menus and options are also useful for creating more advanced searches WATCH out for those powered by Google etc. ensure if these are used you ONLY search the internal site… results from the entire WWW could appear if you are not careful.

Example I need to find information about sports attendance figures at Coventry City games this season. Useful search as its found the data I need, just need to visit each of the links and collate in a table

Online Databases A online database is a data store with lots of information which can be interrogated using a web form, The web form linked to an online database will have many options to select from including ranges, By selecting different options its possible to create search strings which use different logical and relational operators, You will need to find a good example of an online database for band 3 of task b and interrogate it with an many different searches as you can think of.

Simple Online Database Search By entering criteria into the input boxes and selecting options from different pull down menus you can create queries using operators….. “Pizza Take-away” AND “Far Gosford Street, Coventry”
